What do Houstonians want in a coworking space?

Allen Stern of CenterNetworks thoughts has me thinking…

What do Houstonians want/need in order to embrace the coworkinc concept and join a soon to be formed coworking space here in Houston?

Location? Price? Hours? Amenities?

I telecommuted from 2000 to 2005 in Houston, spent the last couple of years in Miami, and next month I’m moving back to Houston to start telecommuting again. I was horrified to find that Kaveh Kanes had closed downtown, because that was the best working cafe in Houston by far.

Facing the loss of KK’s, I’d say my wants are:

Location – needs to be near plentiful & cheap restaurants. When I break for lunch, I want to be able to grab stuff quickly. If I have to get in my car, forget it, I’m going home.

Hours – I’m a morning guy, so an opening time by 5am would be good.

Amenities – internet, clean bathrooms, a few quiet nooks for those pesky phone calls, and for me, huge walls with rotating art. I’m fine with printing out my own or asking area artists to use it as a gallery, but just having inspirational stuff around is so cool. And whiteboards. Lots and lots of whiteboards.

Coffee – the geeks I know are pretty picky about coffee, so the easiest thing to do is just provide the kitchen facilities and lockers so we can stash our stash.

Price – looking around the web, it looks like ballpark $500/mo is the going rate for a fully serviced office. I was thinking more of a big empty loft kind of thing – if I end up in a generic cube I’m no better than when I started – but that price seems fair.
